Corpus Christi, Texas

March 20, 2010

Joe De Santos

The Over 50 Golf Association’s monthly tournament was held at the Gabe Lozano Golf Center in Corpus Christi, Texas on Saturday, March 20, 2010.  The early morning was real cloudy and it was already sprinkling light rain when we teed off.  However, we were expecting a cold front later in the day.   Tee-off time was at 8:00 am, shot gun start.  The format was scramble, best ball,  each team had to use at least 2 drives from each of their A,B,C and D players.  That meant that my team had to use at least 2 of my weak drives.  Most of the time when we play scramble we use the longest drive, period.  This new format kinda made it more challenging.  Our team got to play 12 holes before a thunderous cold front blew in.  It brought high winds, lightning and heavy rain.  It turned out to be a real scramble……..for cover.   The golf course issued rain checks for the number of holes not played.  Our association refunded 100 percent of the entry fee.

The Over 50 Golf Association holds a tournament every third Saturday of the month at a golf course in and around Corpus Christi.  The leader of the association is John McDermott.  Three other associates include first assistant Cliff Pate,  Bob Patterson and Paul Landry.  These guys work very hard to keep our association running smoothly.  John asked me to please tell the members not to sign up if they are going to be absent on the day of the tournament.  It really makes it difficult once the pairings have been set.  He stated that four players were missing for this Saturday’s tournament.   The next tournament will be held at the Oso Beach Golf Course in Corpus Christi on April 17.   All members are encouraged to sign up early.  All golfers that are at least 50 years of age are invited to join our association.  Membership is $12 a year and the year starts in July.  If you want to play with us in April, you can join for $3.00 for the remaining 3 months.  Join in May, $2.00 and June, $1.00.  July starts a new year and the fee will be $12.00,  good until July 2011.   The annual membership drive tournament will be held July 17 at the Oso Beach Golf Course.  All paid members will get a free meal at the Silverado Smokehouse on Weber after the tournament.  That alone is worth the 12 bucks.   There will also be a meeting at the restaurant after the meal.  For those who are not familiar with our golf association,  all tournaments are select drive with shotgun start at 8:00 am.  John asks us  to please try to check in by 7:30.  The following is a schedule for the remainder of the year:

April 17, Oso Beach  2 low balls

May 15 Kingsville Muni best ball

June 19 Pharaohs CC 3 low balls

July 17 Oso Beach best ball (lunch and meeting @ Silverado)
