A lot of us deer hunters give up when the rut is over, thinking that it’s too late to nail the big one and decide to shoot whatever, as long as it has horns or even a doe will do. Big bucks do get sloppy during the rut and after it’s all over, the survivors wake up and think, “what the hell was I thinking?” and start being the very careful animals that they are. That’s when we, the hunters, have to work extra hard to get a nice mature buck. It’s not easy. I’ve gone home empty handed year after year, waiting for the big one that never came. I found an interesting article by Matt Williams in texassportsmanmag.com. that gives us a lot of pointers on how to hunt the big one after or the late part of the rut.
