Yesterday, A man and wife went hiking in a well known backcountry trail in Yellowstone National Park and it proved deadly. The couple came upon a momma grizzly bear and two cubs and predictably, the sow attacked in what more than likely was a protective mode, killing the man. His wife was not badly hurt. It’s very well documented that if you get too close to bear cubs, the mother bear thinks you are trying to harm them and she will attack. As beautiful as Yellowstone is, I would never venture into the woods, unarmed, knowing that bears are all over the place. I know they say to carry bear spray, however, If I was attacked, I would feel better if I was carrying both the spray and a .357 magnum. The magnum would work better if the bear gives you time to draw and shoot. If not, you’re toast anyway. Please understand that I am not advocating for anyone to break the law, I would only shoot in self defense. They did pass a Federal law that allows a licensed handgun holder to carry a weapon in Yellowstone, however, there are several contradicting opinions and other laws that have surfaced. One is that you can carry but you can’t shoot. Now, that’s interesting. I won’t go into this, I’ll let you read the story about the bear attack by clicking on the abcnews.go.com link below and then a “clarification” on the gun law by clicking on yellowstoneinsider.com link, also below:
