Both George West and Bishop High Schools placed 2 players each on the Texas Sports Writers Association high school baseball All-State team. George West’s outfielder Shannon Taylor was named to the second team. Taylor hit .606 in 28 games with 33 RBI. In addition, Taylor had a slugging percentage of .859 and stole 39 bases in 59 attempts. Taylor also went 6-2 as a pitcher with an ERA of 3.11. Bishop’s senior designated hitter Carl Huizar made the All-State third team. He batted .490 with 16 doubles, 30 runs and 33 RBI. Huizar was also named honorable-mention as a pitcher. He went 7-3 with a 1.66 ERA. He averaged 1.8 strikeouts per inning with 120 total in 67.2 innings. George West’s senior outfielder Brett Epperson and Bishop catcher Tommy Cavazos were each named All-State honorable mention. Epperson had a .562 batting average with 20 RBI. His slugging percentage was .888 and he stole 23 bases in 24 attempts. As a pitcher, Epperson went 8-2 with a 2.74 ERA. Cavazos averaged .500 as a batter and had 11 doubles with 44 RBI.
